BASIS
This is a diploma level course designed and managed from the UK by BASIS Registration Ltd .(www.basis-reg.com). Training for this examination is provided in Africa exclusively by Real IPM (Kenya) Ltd. BASIS Examiners from the UK fly to Kenya annually to examine candidates. BASIS is recognized as a relevant qualification by GLOBALGAP and is a legal requirement in the UK for crop protection advisors and those who sell pesticides.
BASIS (vegetables)
Course length: Predominantly a distance learning course with 10 in-class training days. The courses usually start in April and the examinations are in September or October.
Minimum qualifications of trainees: Only experienced agronomists are likely to pass this examination however, the study will be of benefit to less experienced staff as a staff development programme. A diploma in an agricultural subject is essential.
Maximum number of trainees: 20 candidates. Annual enrolments are limited. Early Registration is recommended.

Venue: Training will be divided between Real IPM’s Kichozi Farm in Thika and the farms of candidates. It is a practical course and a lot of the work will be on pest and disease identification and management in the field. BASIS courses can be arranged in other African countries, by prior arrangement, subject to at least 20 candidates on the course.
Lunch: provided by venue host.
Topics covered: BASIS covers all aspects of crop protection, from EU crop protection legislation through to pest, weed and disease identification and control. Candidates will be examined in the following:
- A written project (5,000 words) on a crop protection problem or subject.
- Practical identification test (pests, weeds, diseases).
- Practical field viva (3).
- Panel viva (3 examiners).
- Multiple Choice question paper.
